Brunei Library
（日本語は下のほうの「Read the rest of this entry »」をクリック！） Visiting libraries is a kind of my 'to do' when I travel abroad. I started it when I visited a Helsinki library in Finland. The library had relaxing atmosphere and was quite modernized. I loved it so much. So, as always, I visited a Library when I was in Brunei :)
This is the library building in the capital city Bandar Seri Begawan.
On the left side of the picture, you will see a big picture drawing a book on the middle surrounding by people, animal, etc. It might be describing the importance of knowledge written in a book.
And the right side of the first picture, there is an entrance of the library.
Brunei's official language is Malay, however many Arabic are used, in the library too. Unfortunately I've never studied Malay nor Arabic so what I can understand is they open 8:00-18:00 almost every day :P
Below are pictures I took inside the library. The building has 3 floors, the 1st floor is for adult and the 3rd floor is for young adult.
Many books are piled up on a table. Librarians might have been working with them. Most of library materials are Malay books, but some English books are available too.
On the 2nd floor, there are children library, a service counter, and some computers.
In summary, it's not modernized nor popular like libraries in Singapore. It made me remember what I felt about a library when I was a child: It's quiet and not crowded, might be good for studying, however a bit boring. I changed this idea when I was a university student. The university library had many computers and academic books, and used computers to organize things well. It was fantastic. Moreover, libraries in Singapore are much modernized and owe many computers and materials so lots of people use them. Visiting a Brunei library made me realized I took it for granted. However it seems public libraries in general are not so fantastic yet.
ブルネイでも図書館に行ってきました。初めて海外旅行中に図書館に行ったのはフィンランドのヘルシンキ。ゆったりとしていて、近代的に整備されていて、とっても居心地の良い図書館だったんです。それ以来、旅行中に図書館や大学に足を運ぶ習慣（というとおおげさ？）がつきました。
というわけで、首都バンダルセリベガワンにある図書館のビル。
写真の左側に見える大きな絵、真ん中に本がありその周りに人や動物が描かれています。知識礼讃！
１枚目の写真の右側に見えるのが、入り口です。
ブルネイの公用語はマレー語、また町中ではアラビア語もよく見かけました。図書館の入り口にあるボードにもアラビア語がありました・・・が、私はあいにくマレー語もアラビア語もできません。わかるのはだいたい毎日、開館時間が8:00-18:00ってことだけです :P
中はこんな感じ。建物は３階建てで、１階が大人用フロア、３階が学生向けフロア。この２つは似たような雰囲気でした。
なぜかどっさりと蔵書が積まれたテーブルが。たぶん図書館員さんが作業をしてるのでしょう。蔵書はだいたいマレー語の本でしたが、英語書籍もありました。
２階には子供向けコーナー、サービスカウンター、あとパソコンが何台かありました。
フロアには利用者カードを入れる箱があったりして、全体的にあまり近代化（コンピュータ管理化）されていない印象を受けました。語弊（と年齢ばれ）を恐れず言うと、自分が小学生のときの図書室のような雰囲気。静かで人が少なくて、勉強するには良い環境なのだけれどもなんとなく退屈でほこりっぽい感じでした。とはいえ公共図書館は日本でもこんな感じでしょうか。シンガポールにいると公共図書館が近代的でコンピュータもたくさんあって、毎日たくさんの人が利用している。自分はそれがとても気に入ってしょっちゅう利用しているのですが、それが自分の中で「当たり前」になってきていることに気付きました。
